Oh! that shampoo...well, now there's another kind of herbal essences, I mean with other smell, not that one you show, I remember it smells so good!...but you're right...I haven't seen it in long time!
Yay! I'm so glad someone else remembers the shampoo... I LOVED it and remember buying it thinking I should just keep a bunch of bottles of it just in case, but I forgot! ahh! I don't really like the new line of products, so I'm hoping they bring the original back! ;)
well I tell you where it is this shampoo, is in the desk of one of the sponsors of the company, as a good sourvenir, just a memory, easy if you can sell more expensive with a low quality product, you do it, that happen with the original.
Unfortunately, Vermont Country Store is not selling it anymore... It was actually THEIR version of the old vintage Clairol Herbal Essence Shampoo. It smelled IDENTICAL to the old one. My Mom used the vintage one, and I remember how good it smelled. Now I am back on the hunt for it again.
Vanart green herbal shampoo at Walmart is identical to the original Herbal Essence Shampoo! And for under $2. (Even better than the Vermont Country Store's version.) from Claudia
I am not sure what some of you remember. I was a faithful consumer of the orginal clariol herbal essence from the early 1970's. I have tried all of the products suggested that smell like the orginal clariol herbal essence. I can tell you none and I repeat none of them smell like the orginal herbal essence.
I contacted Proctor and Gamble customer care email and got a completely unacceptable answer. Perhaps EVERYONE should contact them and tell them to bring it BACK! Come on people!
I've written them many times over the years, to no avail. Petitions haven't helped. I can't understand why a business that has a large dedicated group of people wanting one of their products is ignored.
I've tried many of the so called substitutes for the original Herbal Essence shampoo and none reminded me of that great shampoo. I have the same problem with Gillette's Wild Rain aftershave, a great odor, a lot of people who love it, but totally unavailable. I've written to both companies and got the usual stock answer. Yet they hang on to their patented formulas so no one else can make it. I wish something could be done. I'm 82 and would love to smell that shampoo one more time. I bought one on eBay a year ago and it had turned dark brown. The smell was gone, so no luck there.
I just emailed Clairol to let them know that there are more customers out here, looking for a return of their original Herbal Essence shampoo. Any possible substitutions, Vermont Country Store's, Walmart's Vanart green herbal or Softsoap Fresh Aloe, are no longer available. For a while, Soap & Glory had Wash Almighty which was close, but also is no longer available. I'm on my last bottle. I have a nearly empty bottle of the original Clairol Herbal Essence which still has the fragrance, but there is no list of fragrance ingredients on the label. Sigh...
At least now I can smell that beautiful odor every week for a while longer. I found and bought two bars of Herbal Essence soap. It was made briefly at the same time the shampoo was made. It smells just like the original shampoo. I'm down to 1 1/2 bars now. I use it about once a week to wash my hands so I can enjoy the smell. I bet that the people at Clairol now don't even know what we are complaining about. That younger generation doesn't know what they are missing.
Me too, I've written to P&G several times over the last few years from Nova Scotia, begging them to at least release a special "vintage" "anniversary" edition of that magnificent-smelling shampoo. Every now and then some hotel shampoo brings up the merest whisper of a similar smell, and it sets me off again on the quest.
I wrote to Clairol and they said they won't release it. I totally don't understand that, they would make a fortune off the original formula and don't forget those wonderful ads. The girl's long hair, the flowers and I think it was a deer.
It's nice to know there are so many others that reminisce of 70's smells. I've told my kids about the original scent of Herbal Essence shampoo. As a teenager, I would wash my hair in the kitchen sink and it was a luxurious experience. I also use Lemon-Up shampoo, and wore the Cody Sweet Earth solid fragrance trio collection and Musky Jasmine/Baby Soft sprays. I washed dishes in Peach Thrill. Nothing today smells like the great fragrances of the 70's. Seems like it would be a marketing bonanza to bring them back.
it's strange, I just keyed in the words "Herbal Essence- original" in an email which I didn't send to my daughter (telling her that there's aGerman shampoo that smells a lot like it -- "Pure Herbs" - Melissa, Thyme Rosemary), and lo and behold your comment arrived as an email on my computer. Can't understand it, but I sure agree about the mar great smells -- and I'd forgotten Cody Sweet Earth. Lots of musk in those scents I think…
I just wrote again. I know it's almost hopeless. This time I commented that most of the employees are not old enough to remember how great the shampoo was. I suggested they make a small run and sell it only through Amazon. This eliminates the high cost of marketing a new product. They can find out what we are all talking about for a very little cost to themselves. I also mentioned how much I loved the Herbal Essence hand soap. I said I still have 1 and 1/2 bars left and every time I use it, it brings back memories of the great shampoo. I also sent them a picture of a whole wrapped bar in case they had no idea of what it looked like.
It would be great if they introduced it into their current line of Herbal Essences hair care then it wouldn't distract from sales of that product line. Of course, with all of us wanting it, sales would be high for this one scent. Sure do miss it.
I also got a "snotty" reply from them. Must have been the same form letter. They "THINK" they know what their customers want. I guess that's why they keep formulating then discontinuing their shampoo products. I refuse to buy any of the new Herbal Essence shampoos.
I never have bought a Herbal Essence product since the disaster. I will try to avoid all products made by Coty,Inc. The corporation that owns Clairol also owns 76 other products. Here are some of them.

Seriously, I can't stand the imitation "Herbal Essences" that's been foisted on the market since the Original was taken off the market, and I have no idea why the company would want to resist the pressure to re-launch the original, especially 40 years later, when copyrights must have expired.
The Shine Collection herbal essence shampoo sold at Walmart has that sort of same smell as the original Clairol Herbal Essences shampoo. It has chamomile, aloe vera and passion flower. I wonder if they discontinued this nice shampoo too.
Who is keeping the recipe for the original shampoo? Can the public have access to it?
IMHO, the reason the company refuses to relaunch the original HE shampoo is because every company's demographic target is people between the ages of 18 and 49. Most of us who were teenagers and used HE during the 70s and early 80s are past 50 now, so even though we have more money to spend on things than the 18 to 49 year olds, we aren't a part of the target demographic.
You completed a few fine points there. I did a search on the matter and found mainly persons will have the same opinion with your blog. herbal extract supplier
I've been searching for the original HE. Nothing like it. Everytime I go to buy a new bottle of shampoo I smell many different scents and never really find anything I like. I bought a bottle of HE shampoo at a dollar general store and I've kept the bottle hoping to find that scent again but no such luck. It smelled pretty good. If they would make the original they would make a fortune. They are missing out on a great opportunity. Too bad someone can't come up with the original formula!
Don't know how this will turn out but just found this website that makes imitation scents. I just ordered 4 mini perfumes to find out if this imitation of original herbal essences is the same or close. They have a ton of scents. You can get four mini's for $15.00.
Thank you for this! I just went to the site and ordered the original herbal essence scent conditioner. Hope it's like what i remember! Thanks again for sharing😁
The four mini perfumes I bought smell amazing. They are actually essential oils I think. It only takes a dab. I think the herbal essence smells really good. I want to mix it into a shampoo or conditioner to see how it comes out. I bought one called "hippie dreams." I love it. Reminds me of my teenage years....in the 1970's.
I'm 45 (1974) and used the original green and glorious Herbal Essence until 10th grade. I even have a picture of myself, circa 1977, in a drainage ditch on our farm property in an attempt to mimic the girl on the label!
There is a company called Wicked Good Perfume that makes a dupe of the 70s fragrance and 90s fragrance. They make shampoo and conditioner.
I've also heard Caprice Herbal out of Mexico is similar. The Vermont Country Store dupe sadly was not that great.
I'm also desperately searching for shampoo that smells like Flex, Fabrage Organics Wheat & Honey, V05 Henna, St. Ives Jojoba, etc. Miss those wonderful fragrances.
Yes, one more former customer who has been searching for the 70's Clairol's Herbal Essence Shampoo. It was the best smell EVER! I long for it. Please somebody bring it back!!!
I used this shampoo as a young girl and I am just surprised that after all these years it hasn't come back especially when each of the owners knew fully well that the people want it. Coty owns it now. If anyone should know what happened it would be the original owners: Bristol-Myers Squibb and the family Gelbs. They're probably hiding the formula in their kitchen cupboard.
My dear mother liked this shampoo and so did I and we liked the picture on the bottle of the lady in the forest, but I wasn't so into shampoos at that pre-teen age but I do remember liking the smell and the dark green liquid.
I miss this shampoo but most of all in the whole world I miss my mother. I love you mama.
It was the best smelling shampoo I have ever had and I'm 86. I can't understand why they refuse to make it again. I wrote them and suggested that they start with a smaller batch and just sell it through Amazon. I thought businesses were in it to make money and please customers. They are missing that point here. I would be willing to pay double, I think others would too. So why don't they make all us customers happy? I wrote them several times and all I got was a form letter. I wonder if there is any way to put some heat on them so they will do something
I found a new shampoo by Aveeno called Fresh Green Blends Shampoo and Conditioner. Smells VERY much like original Clairol Herbal Essence, & has the extra beneficial and thickening addition of colloidal oat extract. I love it. Next best thing to the original-maybe an improvement on the original CHE.
I did order the Herbal Essence (original) fragrance from the website mentioned above. While it was a nice scent, it most certainly did not smell like the original Clairol shampoo formula. It smelled more like baby powder. If I can find somewhere a list of the original ingredients of the shampoo, I will try and see if a herbalist somewhere can recreate it.
I bought a bottle of the Vanart shampoo mentioned in this discussion. It came from Mex Grocer and with shipping was about $15. It does smell a little like the original Clairol Herbal Essence shampoo, not exactly, but it satisfies my craving to smell that fragrance again. The label on the back says this shampoo contains a product known to cause cancer. I started thinking that maybe THAT IS WHY it is not made anymore. It would explain why Clairol or Proctor and Gamble won't make it. And they don't want to admit that it contained a cancer causing substance. Just a theory.

I read a lot of comments on the original formula Herbal Essence shampoo and I too wish they would put it back on the market. Someone else said the new versions are no good and I agree! There just isn't anything like the old green formula. I also called the company, the lady was uninterested and rude. Why don't they bring it back the new stuff is fake smelling and will never be that smell millions of us want to buy again! Sharon Michigan
I am still looking for HE. It seems so strange that they are always bringing out new scents but REFUSE to bring back the one that people are still talking about after so many years, or at least give us the formula if they don't want it. If anyone finds it again, please contact me - Harold Kornylak
I have been looking for this shampoo for decades. If you are willing to spend $80, you can find it on eBay. I bought a bottle 15 years ago and I saved the very last bit for a special occasion which didn’t come for 12 years. I miss that bottle. Sometimes I would just open the bottle to smell it. Reminds me of my mom and being a kid :)
Do you all remember the BIG botle of this? Was shaped just like Scope. I will never forget the morning my mom took a swig from the wrong bottle and gargled
I too am a former HE user and have never found another product to match the fragrance and total effect that it had on my hair. My mom and I began using HE just after the first commercials began airing and up until we could no longer purchase it again. My husband of 41 years misses that clean not sickenly sweet smell and how my hair felt to the touch. My hair is baby fine and thin. To this day, he occasionally reminisces about my hair back then. He still loves my hair, but never comments on how nice it smells. Should we be contacting Proctor and Gamble, who is said to have purchased the product etc....?
I'm guessing that the formula might have been sold to Unilever along with some of their other products. Suave makes a shampoo in the waterfall and ocean fragrances that's a dead ringer for the original Herbal Essence Shampoo. I also have tried the afore-mentioned items that are similar but don't quite make the magic happen. If you try the Suave versions (even together they are robust) you might be pleasantly surprised. I bet there have been test market analyzes done by P & G and Unilever to see if the consumer has recognized the similarities. It would be unusual that P & G/Unilever wouldn't try to throw something out there knowing that the public has a genuine interest in the original formula. Might be that it contained ingredients that are not environmentally acceptable or have been outlawed for one reason or another. OR they are waiting until the clamoring becomes so loud that they know they have an instant gold mine on their hands...

Dollar Tree carries a Softsoap body wash called Fresh Aloe Fragrance that smells a lot like the original Herbal Essence. Bought four bottles today :-)

It's close, but need a hint of balsam fir. I had a bottle of balsam fir essential oil and the two together smelled right.
